Ohio Mineland Partnership

Our Mission:

"To support and promote responsible reclamation and wise use of mined lands and affected streams by forming partnerships with                            the public, private industry, and resource organizations."

Did You Know?

Ohio has over 200 years of coal mining history with the impact covering 1/3 of the state. Strides towards reclaiming abandoned minelands and improving stream quality have been made since 1977, but much remains. More information can be found on the Ohio Department of Natural Resource Division of Mineral Resources webpage: minerals.ohiodnr.gov

Who Pays for Reclamation?

In 1977, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) was enacted. SMCRA imposed a tax on current mining operations and an additional reclamation tax. Current reclamation tax rates are $0.28/ton for surface and $0.15/ton for underground-mines coal. This tax is paid by coal operators into the Abandoned Mine Reclamation Trust Fund. This fund is then distributed to the various state reclamation programs. Check out the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) webpage for comprehensive and up-to-date information regarding SMCRA and Reclaiming Abandoned Minelands.

Get Involved!

OMP welcomes any group or concerned citizen to join our organization. We are a collaborative partnership joining public, private, industry and research to restore abandoned mine land to productive purpose. You can see what the other Abandoned Mineland States are up to at OurWorksNotDone.org

We also host 2 annual convenings: a spring, one-day meeting and fall, two-day conference. Both provide opportunities to hear current industry efforts, new and proposed legislation, and on-going research regarding monitoring and technology. Each gathering also includes tours of reclamation sites and current abandoned mine land project sites.

Our Goals To Address The Challenges

* Continued support of funding for reclamation

* Broad-based educational and outreach efforts to inform citizens about progress.

* Application of new reclamation technology and techniques.

* Support legislative position to ensure continued support from lawmakers.

* Promote responsible land use in support of environmental and economic benefits.

* Aid watershed restoration groups in the coal region.
